North Star Contributes $225k to Cherokee Schools
CHEROKEE, Iowa - On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, North Star Community Credit Union Board of Directors and staff announced a $225,000 donation to the Cherokee Community School District’s football stadium renovation project.
The funds will be used to install turf on the field and will allow students to use the facility for football games and practices, band practices and performances, physical education classes and other needs for outdoor venues no matter the weather or field conditions. Long term, the project will allow substantial cost savings to the school district in field maintenance.
“Not only will the new turf provide our students with more opportunities,” says Washington High School athletic director, Josh Landhuis, “but a smooth, solid surface is a safer option in preventing injuries in our student athletes.”
With this donation, the committee has secured $632,590 towards their approximately $960,000 goal of completing the project in time for the start of the 2021 school year. The field turf project with accompany a slew of improvements planned to the Cherokee Community School Districts high school facilities this year. Some additional projects include a new track, new tennis courts, and re-paving of the driveway and parking lot.
“We are so proud of the great work our local school system does with the young people here in Cherokee,” says North Star Community Credit Union President/CEO, Jeff Hayes. “We are happy to be able to contribute this money to help shed some positive light during these challenging times.”
