MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union Presents $7,500 Check to Habitat for Humanity
In late October, team members from the MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union presented a check for $7,500 to Habitat for Humanity. The donation will be shared by three Habitat offices that service Boone, Ames and the state office, which services Marshall County.
During the months of June, July and August of this year, MEMBERS1st offered to donate $100 to Habitat for Humanity for every existing auto loan members brought to MEMBERS1st from another lender. "Our members were obviously eager to not only get a great rate on their auto loan, but to know they were also doing good in their community," said Randy Schmerbach, VP of Lending for MEMBERS1st. "In that three-month period, we lent-out over $1 Million for refinanced auto loans."
When asked why they selected Habitat for Humanity as their charity of choice, CEO Janet Borer said, "It's important to us that, as a member-owned organization, we give back to the communities we serve. Habitat has been a well-known support to the Marshalltown community after last year's tornado, but we also know they're doing great things for families in the other communities we serve."
Habitat for Humanity helps open the door for community members to achieve health and well-being in all areas of their lives. "If your physical (housing) needs aren't being cared for, it's pretty tough to focus on being healthy in other areas of your life - in our case, your financial life," commented Schmerbach. "So we truly see Habitat as a partner in our communities."
As a not-for-profit cooperative that is member-owned, it was important to MEMBERS1st that the distinction be made that this donation came from their members. "This donation isn't 'our' money," said Borer. "It's our members' money. So, when we're successful, it's important to us that we use some of that money to enhance, repair and rebuild the communities we serve."
This donation to Habitat for Humanity is just the beginning of MEMBERS1st's efforts to better their community. In October and November, all of the eight MEMBERS1st branches are serving as Toys for Tots drop-off locations, and MEMBERS1st will again be making a monetary donation to the local Toys for Tots campaigns in December.
