Dupaco Honored for its Economic Impact on Dubuque’s Historic Millwork District

DUBUQUE, Iowa—As Dupaco Community Credit Union continues to grow with its membership, the financial cooperative is transforming a vacant manufacturing building into its new operations center. And recently, the credit union was honored for its reinvestment in its downtown Dubuque roots—and its positive impact on the local economy.

The Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce honored Dupaco with the Economic Impact award during the chamber’s Annual Meeting June 20 at the Hotel Julien Dubuque. In addition, former Dupaco president and CEO Bob Hoefer was presented with the Chairman’s Award for his volunteer work as vice chairman of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.

The chamber’s Annual Meeting celebrates successes of the past year, as well as forecasts what the upcoming year might bring.

This spring, Dupaco began revitalizing the historic building, previously known as Voices, in the resurging Millwork District at the corner of 10th and Jackson streets. The building is located in the area where Dupaco was founded in 1948 by employees of the Dubuque Packing Company.

“Beyond giving new life to a tired community treasure, we want the building’s use to best align with other community priorities,” said Dupaco president and CEO Joe Hearn.

The redevelopment of the 174,670-square-foot, five-story building will help meet the needs of Dupaco’s rapidly growing number of members and employees. No Dupaco branches will close as a result of the new operations center.

Dupaco could occupy the building’s top three floors by late 2020, with the first and second floors potentially featuring a mix of retail, entertainment and community space. The redevelopment includes a public walkway through the building that will connect 11th and 10th streets. Paying homage to the building’s artful and historic past, it will be called the Dupaco Voices Building.

As more members join and use their credit union, Dupaco continues to grow, too—expanding and finding new ways to serve its members by boosting their financial positions. During the past six years, Dupaco has grown from serving 64,000 members to more than 118,000. To successfully serve these members, the number of credit union employees also has increased.
