2019-2020 CULAC Trustee and Principal Key Contacts Selected

Marian Holmes, VP of Consumer Lending and GovernmentPKCscaption Affairs at Community 1st Credit Union, has been selected as Iowa's Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) Trustee for the 2019 - 2020 term. CULAC is CUNA's federal political action committee, and each state has a representative on the council. As the Iowa CULAC Trustee, Marian will help oversee the collection and distribution of the millions of dollars CULAC raises nationwide to contribute to congressional candidates who are supportive of credit unions. 

Iowa's six Principal Key Contacts (PKCs) have also been selected for the 2019 - 2020 Congress. Applicants were selected by League Chair Helen Pearce, League Advocacy Committee Chair Dale Owen and League CEO Murray Williams. PKCs are charged with building relationships with their assigned members of congress and staff. PKCs also travel to Washington at least once a year to lobby on issues important to the industry.

  • Senator Grassley: Pat Drennen, CEO of 1st Gateway Credit Union
  • Congresswoman Axne: Dave Cale, CEO of Financial Plus Credit Union
  • Congresswoman Finkenauer: Dave Klavitter, CMO at Dupaco Community Credit Union
  • Congressman King: Scott Zahnle, CEO of Greater Iowa Credit Union
  • Congressman Loebsack: Jeff Disterhoft, CEO of University of Iowa Community Credit Union

*New Event* ICUF Credit Union Community Impact Roundtable February 12

Credit unions play a significant and impactful role in the communities they serve. New this year, ICUF is hosting a roundtable on the subject of credit union community impact. Attendees will learn about best practices in supporting their communities, how to measure impact and will hear about state-wide initiatives aimed at raising awareness on the needs of working families in our state. This event would be ideal for any credit union representative who leads or champions community impact or marketing at their credit union.

The Credit Union Community Impact Roundtable is set for Tuesday, February 12 in eastern Iowa - more information to come soon. Register today for this new event.

Registration for the 2019 Legislative and Regulatory Conference ihires-c-freeds open! Join us for two days, February 19-20, at the Embassy Suites Des Moines, to learn about pressing credit union topics and how you can advocate for credit unions.

Newly instated NCUA Regional Director for Iowa credit unions, Cherie Freed, will be speaking at Leg Reg about the NCUA's realignment shifts, regulatory changes and how these things will affect Iowa credit unions.

Young credit union professionals, apply for the Legislative and Regulatory Conference ELC Scholarship

ICUL wants to sponsor two young credit union professionals to learn about hot credit union issues and give them the opportunity to network with top Iowa credit union leaders. Don't wait to apply - the application deadline is January 11!

Expansion of Educational Discounts

The educational offerings available through ICUL grant-moneyare aimed at developing our system, future leaders and supporting specific credit union-related fields of expertise. Participation in these events can strengthen the safety and soundness, well-being and culture of your credit union, supporting its ongoing health and vitality.

In an effort to encourage small credit union engagement and help alleviate the barrier of cost, we are excited to expand the range of educational discounts in 2019. ICUL will now offer discounts to credit unions up to $50 million in assets, an increase from $35 million.

Here are the 2019 education and event discounts:

  • $30.1 - $50 million in assets (25% discount)
  • $20.1 - $30 million in assets (50% discount)
  • $0 - $20 million in assets (75% discount)

The Iowa ID Theft Victim Assistance Coalition hasIdentity Theft-1 recently created a great resource listing resources and actions mapping out steps for victims of identity theft, allowing them to get the best advice and deal most effectively with the situation they face. This handout is a valuable resource, and we encourage you to utilize it at your credit union.
