Credit Union Leaders Attend Legislative and Regulatory Issues Conference
Credit union leaders from throughout Iowa gathered in downtown Des Moines last week for ICUL's  Legislative and Regulatory Issues Conference. Presentations from Governor Kim Reynolds and Superintendent Katie Averill, among others, examined some of the credit union industry's most pressing legislative and regulatory topics during the two-day event. New this year, attendees also had an opportunity to Hike the Hill and meet with legislators to advocate for credit unions.

Join Us for One Big Capitol Hill Day on March 7!
Due to the legislature's intent to adjourn in early April, we are going to combine the two Capitol Hill Day events into one big event on March 7. This is also strategically timed ahead of the IBA's hill visit in March, so a good turnout from credit union supporters is important. Invite your employees, board members and members to sign up to join fellow Iowa credit union advocates March 7. This old-fashioned, grassroots lobbying effort remains the most effective way to get a legislator's attention.

The day will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m., and an afternoon visiting with lawmakers will follow from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Click here to register. Your support and advocacy is appreciated!
"Protect Financial Choice" Campaign Update
Knowing attacks from banks would intensify this legislative session, ICUL was prepared with more aggressive radio and TV ads. Click here to view a new TV spot that is now playing on FOX News and CNN, and click here to listen to the new radio ad that will be playing on radio stations statewide. In addition, guest editorials from ICUL's CEO Pat Jury and Affinity's CEO Andy Fogle have been published by the Des Moines Register.

Help First-Time Homebuyers Save holding_house_key.jpg

During the 2017 legislative session, the Iowa Legislature passed a bill introducing first-time homebuyer savings accounts. These accounts allow for individuals or married couples to begin the process of saving for their first home, while earning interest and being able to claim a tax deduction on their savings accounts, up to $4,000 per year.

Credit unions can participate in the first-time homebuyer program simply by providing information to members regarding the option. Standard savings accounts can be utilized for the program and it is the responsibility of the member to report the account to the Department of Revenue.
