4Q 2016 Numbers Show Iowa Credit Unions Experienced Outstanding Growth
Callahan & Associates released its Quarterly Performance Summary for the fourth quarter of 2016, which compares Iowa credit unions to credit unions nationally and their banking competitors. According to the December 31, 2016 summary, Iowa's 94 credit unions continued to see outstanding growth:
  • Loan growth. Reported loan growth of 15.8 percent, bringing the total loan portfolio to $12 billion. First mortgage originations experienced a 36.8 percent year over year increase, to $2.4 billion. In aggregate, new and used auto loan balances experienced exceptional growth of 17.5 percent to top $4.2 billion.
  • Share growth. Share growth reported a year-over-year increase of 9.6 percent bringing total share balances to $13 billion.
  • Member business loans. Member business loans grew to $1.6 billion at Iowa credit unions with 46 of Iowa's 94 credit unions offering this service. However, the data shows that credit unions continue to focus on consumers. Of the 334,980 total member loans originated in 2016, only 0.9 percent (3,089 loans) were member business loans.
  • Member relationship. The average member relationship is on the rise - up 6.9 percent to $20,772.

Advocacy Updates
The 2017 legislative session has been busy, with proactive credit union legislation moving through the legislative process. "Skip a Pay" has been an ICUL priority, and it has been making its way through the legislature as House File 512/Senate File 177. This important legislation will help clarify Iowa code to allow this program to be continued at Iowa credit unions and enable Iowans to keep more of their money when they need it most. Stay tuned for a full call to action on the Skip a Pay bills that will provide an opportunity for your credit union employees, board members and members to contact their legislators and ask for their support on the legislation. Another bill, Senate File 418, aims to modernize the Iowa Consumer Credit Code by updating parts of the code that have not been touched in decades. A great way to talk with your legislators about these bills is in person. RSVP for Capitol Hill Day on April 5.
