Director of Commercial Underwriting
This position oversees commercial loan presentations to the Commercial Loan Committee and works closely with Commercial Lenders to assess loan quality along with providing guidance on rates and terms. They provide guidance to ensure consistency in the analysis, interpretation and written presentations, based on business/personal financial statements, tax returns, credit reports and other information pertinent to the evaluation of a commercial loan request.
•Knowledgeable of NCUA and Iowa Code guidelines for business lending, as well as all credit union policies and procedures.
•Knowledge of all Commercial Loan underwriting guidelines, policies, processes, and regulations.
•Responsible for ensuring credit policies of the credit union are adhered to, credit risk is mitigated, and accurate business records, documentation preparation, and department procedures are followed.
•Responsible for underwriting and/or review of underwriting for commercial loans over $15 million.
•Identify strengths and weaknesses of a business borrower to effectively manage credit exposure.
•Partner with Commercial Lenders to review loan opportunities and determine qualification requirements, rates and terms based on current market conditions.
•Provide guidance on assessing collateral values and credit risk associated with commercial loan requests. Provide assistance with asset verifications and property inspections as needed.
•Review credit memos being presented to the Commercial Loan Committee.
•Provide oversight and guidance to the Credit Analyst team on credit presentations for new and existing relationships.
•Partner with peer Credit Unions to review commercial loan participation opportunities.
•Responsible for commercial or credit union projects to assess risk associated with future business opportunities being presented to Veridian Credit Union.
•Implement and oversee best practices for interpreting and analyzing business and personal financial statements, tax returns, credit reports and other information pertinent to the evaluation of a commercial loan request.
•Implement and oversee best practices for determining profitability, net worth, ability to repay, and for creating cash flow analysis for borrowers and guarantors.
•Stay informed on market conditions and industry trends in all of Veridian’s lending markets.
•Serve as a resource for Credit Review when questions arise regarding loan structure and documentation.
•Knowledgeable of Veridian’s annual review process to determine continued creditworthiness on existing relationships. Identify risks and work with Commercial Lenders to address concerns as needed.
•Prepare appraisal reviews and have a general understanding of appraisals.
•Strong understanding of the Core and all commercial lending software systems.
•Provide training specific to the interpretation and analysis of commercial and commercial real estate lending as needed. Work together with the Analyst Team to identify training needs and best practice processes.
Required Education and Experience
•Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
•10+ years of experience in Commercial and Commercial Real Estate analysis.
•10+ years of experience with credit analysis.
•10+ years of experience with asset/liability management risk assessment.
•Proficiency in Excel, Access and Crystal.
