The Iowa Credit Union League (ICUL) is the non-profit, trade association that represents the interests of Iowa’s state and federally chartered credit unions and their nearly one million members. ICUL was established in 1930, and more than 75 years later, continues to focus on helping our member credit unions succeed. Our vision is “to foster financial stability and success of our member credit unions.” ICUL is a dynamic organization that provides the following services to Iowa’s credit union industry:
Community Development
ICUL is focused on finding ways for Iowa credit unions to serve the underserved markets in Iowa – primarily low-income Iowans, rural Iowans and small business owners. Staff is coordinating an extensive financial education program to positively impact the underserved target audience. ICUL serves as a resource for credit unions that wish to become low-income or community-development designated in order to better serve the target audience. Staff also promotes legislation and regulations that will help credit unions serve these communities.
Legislative Advocacy
ICUL focuses on legislative advocacy throughout the year to help champion the credit union mission and advance the credit union movement. ICUL staff, credit unions and their members hike the hill in Des Moines and Washington, D.C., each legislative session to speak with legislators about the importance of credit unions and the issues affecting our industry. Staff also coordinates events and fundraisers to help raise money for the Credit Union Political Action Committee (CUPAC), in order to support legislative candidates who support credit unions.
Public Affairs
The public affairs department works closely with credit unions to disseminate pertinent information to the media and community about Iowa credit unions. Staff also works on an annual Advocacy Campaign that targets legislators and consumers through radio ads, print ads, billboards, and various other materials which emphasize the importance of credit unions. The department coordinates grassroots mobilization and encourages credit union members to speak out on issues affecting our industry.
Regulatory Compliance
Iowa credit unions are heavily regulated by the National Credit Union Administration and the Iowa Division of Credit Unions. ICUL offers support and expertise to credit unions to help them understand and comply with these regulations. In addition, the regulatory department offers professional products through ICUL Compliance Services.
Education
ICUL holds numerous professional development seminars each year for Iowa credit unions to help them learn more about how to best serve their members. The education department also organizes the Iowa Credit Union Convention, administers a credit union certification program and a vendor member program.
Management Consultation
ICUL's management consultants are strategic partners with Iowa credit unions to help them identify goals, challenges, and prepare for the future development of their credit union. Our consultants have a strong credit union background, provide educated advice and personalized service.
